Tidbits & News From The DNC

Murphy’s Law

August 25th, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Some of you following our convention coverage on TDC may have noticed we went off line for about an hour tonight.

We are not quite sure what happened during the outage, but our tech people tell me that a fix has been installed and all our pages are staring to come back on-line.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

When Anchors Stop By

August 25th, 2008 Posted in DNC | No Comments »

Charlie Gibson, anchor of ABC’s World News with Charlie Gibson, stopped by our suite for a guest appearance on 7NEWS at 5 p.m.

While waiting to go on the air, he noticed our water cooler which has a sign asking staff to take one cup and put their name on it and reuse cups.

“What is this?” he asked. “Budget cuts,” we responded. He laughed and put his name on a cup.

You can expect to see the cup on Ebay soon.

Sneak Peak — Michelle’s Speech

August 25th, 2008 Posted in DNC | No Comments »

Mayor Hickenlooper has just taken the stage. Do you think the convention will boost his political status?

The Obama campaign set us some excerpts from Michelle Obama’s speech. Here is one paragraph:

“But each of us also comes here tonight by way of our own improbable journey. I come here tonight as a sister, blessed with a brother who is my mentor, my protector and my lifelong friend. I come here as a wife who loves my husband and believes he will be an extraordinary president. I come here as a Mom whose girls are the heart of my heart and the center of my world – they’re the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I think about when I go to bed at night.  Their future – and all our children’s future – is my stake in this election.”

First Bloopers Of The DNC

August 25th, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

3:00 p.m.

With three beats of the gavel, Howard Dean opened the Democratic National Convention.

The hall is half full, with many delegates wandering around and journalists chasing them.

The Delaware delegation is wearing Hawaiian shirts and waving Obama posters.

Former Colorado state representative Polly Beca gave in invocation. During her prayer, the giant HD screen behind her showed a US Senate seal.  The first goof of the convention.

Potential VPs get the bad news

August 22nd, 2008 Posted in DNC, Obama, VP | No Comments »

World is Barrack Obama called the potential vice-presidential candidates on his short list Thursday night, letting them know they were not selected.

Obama says he has made his choice but legions of reporters, with sources throughout the campaign,  have been unable to find out who he picked.  That probably means very few, if any, of his staff know who he chose.

Obama is set to appear with his choice on Saturday in Springfield, Ill.

Public Enemy Not Coming To Denver?

August 21st, 2008 Posted in DNC | No Comments »

The rap group Public Enemy won’t be giving a free concert during the Democratic National Convention festivities — and wasn’t even aware they were being promoted for a Tuesday show.

At least that’s what the Rocky Mountain News was told when reporter Mark Brown contacted Chuck D (real name Carlton Ridenhour).

Chuck D says he’s never heard of Re-Create 68, the group that announced the date, time and place of the free concert. He said he will be in another state on Tuesday, taking care of family business.

Glenn Spagnuolo, the co-founder of Re-Create 68, had previously announced the group would give a free concert at Civic Center, on Tuesday, at 2 p.m.

On Wednesday, the group issued a news release that said in part, “We have been assured by Mad Society Productions that a contract is signed, financial arraignments have been made, and airline tickets have been purchased for Public Enemy. At this point, we have not been told anything other than a possible change in the scheduled time.”

Postal Service sells $10 DNC Envelopes

August 21st, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The USPS is ready to cash in the Democratic National Convention in Denver with commemorative envelopes featuring the DNC and a special postmark.

For $10, you also get a 42 cent stamp on the envelope.

For comparison, stamps were 1 cent in 1908 when Denver hosted its previous DNC convention.

Got Oxygen?

August 21st, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Mile-High Denver is famous for its thin air and that could be a problem for some delegates and visitors coming from sea level. At 5,500 feet high, Denver can leave some gasping and wheezing.

That’s where Oxygen Plus comes in. It’s a handy canister of enriched oxygen in a can. According to a story on TheDenverChannel.com, it’s now the official canned oxygen for the Democratic National Convention.

Didn’t Get Tickets To Obama’s Speech? Try This

August 18th, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The DNCC says it was overwhelmed by requests for tickets to Sen. Barack Obama’s speech at Invesco Field on the last day of the convention.

Sadly, not everyone was able to get a seat, but one local venue is offering a way to watch the speech in style.

Large screens will be set up at 26th and Welton Streets in the Five Points area after the Five Jazz & Blues Festival from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

This is a 21 and older event sponsored by After Five, LLC.

Tickets are $5 per person and will be available at the gate.
